The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter) by Elon Musk on March 28, 2025.

Founded two years ago, xAI has quickly emerged as a leading AI lab, building models and data centers at scale. X, formerly known as Twitter, is a social media platform and microblogging service, which had already integrated Grok, an AI chatbot developed by xAI.

In the acquisition announcement, Musk emphasized X’s large user base, 600 million active users, and noted that the acquisition would “intertwine” the futures of xAI and X. The combined entity will integrate data, models, compute, distribution, and talent to maximize potential. Merging the two companies will allow xAI to leverage X’s user data to further train and enhance AI models like Grok.

We will provide additional updates on the acquisition and its implications as more information becomes available.
